Apollon’s MDT – Day 27: How has my relationship with Apollon changed over time?

Χαίρετε ἀναγνώστες!

Again we come to a day where I don’t have a whole lot to say, though I won’t be filling it in with hymns, this time. I wanted to talk about my relationship with Apollon and how it has changed over time.

My relationship with Apollon has not changed very much over the years. Even throughout this month where I have honoured Him daily, I do not feel like it has changed particularly much. And that is ultimately ok, you will never have a deeply personal relationship with all Deities. I have had a stronger connection to Zeus and Athena over the years.

Nevertheless, what did change is that as I learned more about Hellenismos and Apollon, that my understanding of Him and His domains has grown substantially. Like many people I dealt with the Gods in those same little pigeonholes that society at large does, and by practising the religion and learning I have learned how limited and silly those pigeonholes really are. I have learned of domains and aspects of domains of Apollons that I didn’t know where part of Him before.

Furthermore, I have also learned more deeply the connections Apollon has with various other Deities, including sometimes Deities I did not know of before (Ἀρισταῖος,  Aristaios), or connections that I did not know ran so deep (Ἑρμῆς, Hermes). And through learning about many epithets* I learned even more about Him and His actual cult, rather than His mythological narrative.

Thyraion 30/12/2016

My Thyraion, the bowl with the smaller stone is dedicated to Apollon Agyieus. The herm was produced by Lykeia Botanica.

Basically, through study and practice, I have gained a deeper understanding of Apollon, and my relationship with Him has changed in that way. Another way my relationship changed significantly, is when I established a θυραῖον (Thyraion-shrine) for the Gods Who offer protection to the Household members when they leave the house, the Στροφαῖοι Θεοί (Gods of the Doorstep) or Θυραῖοι Θεοί (Gods of the Door). This is Ἑρμῆς Ἐνόδιος (Hermes Enodios, Hermes in the Road) and  Ἀπόλλων Ἀγυιεύς (Apollon Agyieus, Apollon of the Streets). This allowed me to worship Apollon in His aspect as Agyieus more closely and faithfully to ancient tradition. You can see a picture of my Thyraion next to this paragraph.

Well, that about round things up, so I’ll leave it at this.

*While I originally planned to merge two related topics together to make way for a second seventh-day topic, to deal with the epithets, I have since reconsidered this and decided to just add an extra day at the end of the MDT project for this. I would also still like to discuss some Lacedaemonian festivals of Apollon, so that’ll be another extra day.
